We've all come across the Tik Tok video “Dropping Gems” about airline secrets. These videos have made some hefty claims and I felt it was important to verify their validity of them.
What better way to start other than checking the Department of Transportation rules and regulations myself? To my surprise, they offer amenities at different levels that aren't published to the public via the airline site. They are there, but you do have to be specific- do tons of reading and dissect all of the information! When they say airlines don't want you to know- THEY MEAN IT!
I found this chart from the Department of transportation that details the airline's cancelation and delay policies. They base the policy on a controllable cancellation or delay is essentially a delay or cancellation caused by the airline. Examples include maintenance or crew problems, cabin cleaning, baggage loading and fueling.
Airlines are required to adhere to the promises that they make in their customer service plans.
Remember these commitments do not impact your entitlement to a refund. If an airline cancels your flight or makes a significant change in the flight- regardless of the reason- they are required to provide a prompt refund to a passenger whether the purchase was refundable or not. This only applies should the passenger choose not to accept the alternative offered, such as rebooking on another flight.
In the following situations, consumers are entitled to a refund of the ticket price and/or associated fees:
- Cancelled Flight Schedule Change/Significant Delay
- Class of Service Change
- Unused Optional Service Fees
- Unused Baggage Fees
- Standard Fully refundable ticket price
